Success
By 6-Early Childhood Coalition United Way volunteers have
long recognized the economic and social benefits of investing
in early childhood development through the Success By
6 (SB6) initiative. SB6 examines and promotes effective
ways to help ensure that the most vulnerable children
of Knoxville enter their school-age years healthy and
ready to learn.
Organizations and individuals interested in cooperative
efforts to serve the very youngest of Knoxville's population
meet monthly to discuss creative ways for gaining attention
and resources for children from birth to six years of
age.
United Way Launches Born Learning Campaign
United Way, the Ad Council and Civitas have launched
the Born Learning public engagement campaign to help
parents and caregivers create early learning opportunities
for young children. Through national public service
advertising, a Web site, educational material and community
mobilization support, Born Learning provides "doable"
action steps that are fun and easy to help prepare young
children for school.
Resources and tools for nurturing brain development
in young children are available locally as well. The
Healthy and Smart Start Task Force and United Way of
Greater Knoxville have teamed up with Dolly Parton's
Imagination Library and the Knox County Public Library
to host a series of "Building Better Brains"
workshops in Knoxville. Families attending a session
will receive a bag of "brain building tools,"
which includes a toy, a Baby Play book, and much more.
Session times are listed below. To find out more about
the workshops call Charlene Ellis at (865) 523-8695
x 1266.
