UNITED WAY OF GREATER KNOXVILLE ANNOUNCES 2005 CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN
Bertelkamp seeks community's support in meeting local needs.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (August 11) - United Way of Greater Knoxville announced today Bert Bertelkamp, president of Bertelkamp Automation, Inc. and color analyst for the Vol Network's broadcasts of The University of Tennessee men's basketball games, will serve as the 2005 campaign chairman. Poised to lead United Way through its 84th fund-raising campaign in Knoxville, Bertelkamp is asking for the community's continued support as he strives to raise $11.7 million.

He and his team of volunteers are responsible for raising the dollars in this fall's campaign that will ultimately support local health and human service programs funded by United Way. Local support is critical to sustaining the community's safety net throughout 2006. This year's campaign will run Tuesday, August 30 through Friday, November 18.

"Knoxville is very fortunate to have many generous citizens and businesses that have done an outstanding job of contributing to United Way," Bertelkamp said. "We also have a well-managed and well-staffed United Way serving the agencies in our community. Our challenge is to continue to raise the bar as the needs in Knoxville grow because there is never a shortage of people who need our help. We must continue to call on new individuals and businesses to help us meet our goal."

Bertelkamp, a native Knoxvillian and former University of Tennessee basketball player, has assisted United Way in various volunteer roles for many years. He has been actively involved in local charities as well as his church, Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, and currently serves on the board of directors for United Way, YMCA and Knoxville Youth Sports.

"Knoxville is a great place to live and raise a family for most of us," Bertelkamp said. "For others who are struggling with issues from health care to housing to even having enough food for their children, things are not so great. I believe the people of Knoxville care about those people and will step up like they have so many times before. We, as a team, will raise the funds necessary to make a real impact on these people's lives."

United Way of Greater Knoxville is a local, independent organization dedicated to improving lives by building a better community. In partnership with 50 agencies, local business, community leaders and ordinary citizens, United Way tackles issues that matter most. By working together, we provide a safety net of services addressing Knoxville's most basic needs while working toward lasting change.
