UNITED WAY OF GREATER KNOXVILLE ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP

Jan Wade
President & General Manager
WATE 6

United Way of Greater Knoxville announced today Jan Wade, president and general manager of WATE 6, will serve as the 2006-2008 chairman of the board. In her new role, Wade will convene a 40 member board as they make funding decisions related to community impact as well as lead a team of nearly 500 community volunteers as they strive to identify and address Knoxville's most critical health and human service needs.

"I am truly honored to be chosen to serve in this position because I believe the work of United Way today is more critical than ever before," Wade said. "My work with United Way and the agencies they support has certainly made an impact in my life. I have had the advantage of being actively involved with the fund distribution process for several years now. Allocating dollars can be a daunting process, but I am forever impressed with the thoughtful decisions that our volunteers make."

Wade has enjoyed an impressive 30-year career in the broadcast industry. Prior to moving to Knoxville, she held positions in marketing, promotions and programming at stations in Kentucky, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Florida. Her career brought her to Tennessee in 1986 to work at the Young Broadcasting station, WKRN-TV, in Nashville. In 1994, when Young Broadcasting bought WATE as part of a three-station purchase, Wade was transferred to Knoxville to oversee operations.

"Over the past couple of years, United Way volunteers have sought new and exciting ways to create real community impact, and I have enjoyed being part of that process," Wade said. "United Way is focused on engaging the community to find out what the real needs are in Knoxville and then working to bring the right people together to find ways to address those needs. I look forward to being a part and seeing how the work we do today really improves our community into the future."

Wade, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, has assisted United Ways in various volunteer roles for many years. While in Knoxville, she has actively participated in the annual campaign, the communications and marketing efforts and has been instrumental in distributing millions of dollars in the community through the annual allocations process. Wade has also been actively involved in various other local charities, serving on the board of directors for The Historic Tennessee Theatre, St. Mary's Hospital Women's Health Advisory, Legacy Parks Foundation and Executive Women's Association. In addition, she has served as chairman of the board for Knoxville Opera and Second Harvest Food Bank.
