UNITED WAY OF GREATER KNOXVILLE ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY INVESTMENTS

United Way of Greater Knoxville released today their 2007 community investments. These funds will be distributed to the organization’s 49 community partners to support a network of health and human services in Knoxville throughout 2007.

During the year, nearly 200 volunteers work diligently to visit the over 140 programs within the agencies funded by United Way. In February, each United Way community partner is scheduled to present their programs and make requests for future funding. Volunteers then review the proposals and make recommendations based on where they determine the dollars will make the greatest impact and address United Way’s mission of helping people reach a greater level of self-sufficiency. Funding recommendations are formally approved by United Way’s board of directors and announced in April.

In reviewing this year’s allocation requests, volunteers invested significant increases in funding to a few targeted needs in our community. Some of those include additional funds to support 211, East Tennessee’s Information and Referral line—a free confidential telephone line to help residents find health and human services.  United Way more than doubled the organization’s previous year’s funding to assist with expanded coverage to 24 hours a day, seven days a week and for enhancements to the 211 website to allow community agencies access to its database of services. Other increases in funding to programs will place more abused and neglected children in safe, permanent homes and provide clothing to needy Knox County school children.

Thanks to our community’s support, United Way exceeded their 2006 campaign goal of $12.5 million, enabling volunteers to have more resources available to mentor our children, provide safe neighborhoods, support our aging population and meet other increasing social service needs.

United Way is currently recruiting volunteers for the 2008 allocations process. For more information or to volunteer, call (865) 523-9131.
