SAMMIE LYNN PUETT VOLUNTEER AWARD ANNOUNCED AT
2008 UNITED WAY ANNUAL MEETING
United Way of Greater Knoxville awarded the 2008 Sammie Lynn Puett Volunteer Award to Dr. Robert H. Harvey today at their annual recognition meeting. This award recognizes exceptional volunteer service and leadership in the Knoxville community in honor of the late Sammie Lynn Puett, a long-time volunteer with United Way of Greater Knoxville. It is presented to a person or persons who have demonstrated a long history of helping others and working to make our community a better place. Past recipients of the award have included Bo Shafer, John and Harriett Smartt, Dr. Joe Johnson, Wayne Murdock, Jim and Natalie Haslam, and last year, Coach Pat Summit.
Dr. Harvey is very active in the Knoxville community and has served on the board of the Knoxville Symphony, the Joy of Music School, and in the Northside Kiwanis Club. He has devoted five years to the General Assembly Council for the Presbyterian Church and has served as an elder and past moderator of the East Tennessee Presbytery. Dr. Harvey has served four times and is currently the interim president of Knoxville College, his alma mater, and even continued to teach after his retirement in 1988. He has been very devoted to United Way of Greater Knoxville through his service as Allocations Committee Chair and by representing United Way of Greater Knoxville on several community committees. The United Way of Greater Knoxville Board of Directors considers Dr. Harvey an outstanding community leader who is truly involved in advancing the common good.
