THE YOUTH ACTION COUNCIL ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR 2006 KNOXVILLE YOUTH SUMMIT

United Way of Greater Knoxville, along with the City of Knoxville and Knox County Mayors' Youth Action Council, will host the Knoxville Youth Summit April 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center. A premiere event for youth, by youth, the summit is an opportunity for high school students to come together and address issues facing teens today.

The summit is a fun event with entertainment, activities and problem-solving workshops. Pat Summitt, The University of Tennessee Women's Basketball coach, with help from members of the Youth Action Council, will kick off the event. At lunch, summit participants will have an opportunity to discuss the ideas and concerns expressed in the morning workshops with public officials, including members of School Board, City Council and County Commission. Following lunch, keynote speaker Josh Shipp will share his empowering story of triumph over tragedy.

You can register online for the youth summit or call 523-9131, ext. 223. The summit is a free event open to teens ages 14-17. Groups are encouraged to register in advance to reserve lunch. Deadline for registration is April 5.

The Youth Action Council (YAC)-A Voice for Youth is a collaborative partnership between United Way of Greater Knoxville, the Knox County Mayor's Office, and the City of Knoxville Mayor's Office. The Youth Action Council provides a representative body of teens in Knox County to create strong relationships between youth and their communities. This council works to promote young people as a resource for community problem solving by facilitating opportunities for youth to engage in community service and local government.
