UNITED WAY OF GREATER KNOXVILLE BEGINS FUND DISTRIBUTION
Each year, thousands of people in Knoxville come together
in the largest community-wide fund-raising effort in
our area, but what happens to those dollars after they
are collected? What does it take to distribute millions
in our community? Who makes those decisions, and how
are the greatest needs determined?
Throughout the year, nearly 200 volunteers work diligently
to visit over 140 health and human service programs
funded by United Way. In February, those same volunteers
review funding requests and distribute the money raised
during the fall United Way campaign.
"I am always amazed to watch the allocation process
at work," Lee Thomas, allocations committee chairman,
said. "One of our community's most valuable resources
is its volunteers. They are committed and put long hours
into reviewing funding requests and working with the
community partners. They are quick to ask the hard questions,
and they are very concerned about stewardship of the
donors' contributions ensuring that those dollars are
spent in a manner that has the greatest impact for this
community. "
Each United Way community partner is scheduled to present
their programs and make requests for funding. Volunteers
then review the proposals and make recommendations based
on where they feel the dollars will make the greatest
impact. Funding recommendations will be formally approved
at United Way's annual meeting in April.
Thanks to our community's support, United Way exceeded
the goal of $11.7 million, enabling volunteers to have
more resources available to mentor our children, provide
safe neighborhoods, support our aging population and
meet other increasing social service needs.
United Way of Greater Knoxville is a local, independent
organization dedicated to improving lives by building
a better community. In partnership with 50 agencies,
local business, community leaders and ordinary citizens,
United Way tackles issues that matter most. By working
together, we provide a safety net of services addressing
Knoxville's most basic needs while working toward lasting
change.
