EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER PROGRAM ANNOUNCES ALLOCATION OF FUNDS

The Knox County board of the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) announced today they have awarded $179,746 to seven area organizations in Phase 24 of their initiative to prevent homelessness. United Way administers these funds on behalf of the national EFSP board.

The board, made up of representatives from community organizations, met and distributed this allocation to Columbus Home, Child & Family Tennessee, Community Action Committee, Hospitality Pantries, The Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank and Volunteer Ministry Center. The funds from Phase 24 must be spent by September 30, 2006.

The Emergency Food and Shelter National Program (EFSP) was created in 1983 to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies, both nonprofit and governmental, in an effort to help people with economic emergencies. The EFSP funding is open to organizations helping hungry and homeless people. EFSP funds must be used to supplement feeding, sheltering, rent/mortgage and utility assistance efforts only.
