UNITED WAY OF GREATER KNOXVILLE AWARDED $90,000 HURRICANE RESPONSE AND RECOVERY GRANT

United Way of Greater Knoxville (UWGK) has been awarded a $90,000 Hurricane Response and Recovery grant from United Way of America to assist with the recovery process for individuals from the Gulf Coast area who have relocated to Knox County.

United Way of America, the organization's national organization, collected millions of dollars for long-term hurricane relief making grants, totaling over $15 million, available to local United Ways. A task force of the Knox County Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC) composed of representatives from various local organizations established the criteria and guidelines for distributing the funds. Under the voucher system, funds for designated services will be available to evacuees immediately.

Funds can be used for utilities and household items, transportation, child care, medicine and special medical supplies and equipment. Knox County Community Action Committee (CAC), a United Way community partner, will serve as the primary case management resource for the grant funds. For more information regarding the disbursement of the United Way of America grant, contact CAC's Homeward Bound Division at (865) 546-3500.

It is estimated that there are 300 households of former Gulf Coast citizens living in Knox County. United Way is dedicated to the recovery efforts in our local community. This grant represents one strategy to fulfill UWGK's mission to bring together resources to improve the lives of people in our community by helping them achieve their potential for self-sufficiency.
