UNITED WAY LAUNCHES EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT
AWARENESS EFFORT
United Way of Greater Knoxville will launch an effort
to increase awareness about the Earned
Income Tax Credit (EITC) by hosting a tax season
kickoff event on January 10 at 4 p.m. at United Way,
1301 Hannah Avenue.
The meeting will bring together members of the tax,
financial services and housing assistance communities
in Knoxville as well as representatives from the city
and county governments. Mary Gillum, Director of the
Tennessee Taxpayer Project, a venture of Legal Aid Society
of Tennessee and the Cumberlands, will speak.
EITC is a refundable credit available to low-income
workers and their families. Depending on income and
family size, eligible taxpayers can receive up to $4,500.
There are over 20 free tax preparation sites in Knox
County, all staffed with trained volunteers who can
help taxpayers file for EITC. These sites allow the
taxpayer to pocket the full amount of his or her refund,
without having to spend money on tax preparation fees.
Information about free tax preparation sites is available
by calling 2-1-1 East Tennessee Information & Referral,
a United Way community partner.
EITC is a valuable resource for low-income individuals
and families which is often used to pay rent, utility,
or other bills or to open a bank account. For some families,
this refund can amount to a
40 percent boost in available income; however, according
to the IRS, up to 25 percent of eligible
Knox County residents fail to claim this tax credit.
Because the money received from the EITC can offer
a unique wealth-building opportunity for low-income
residents of Knox County, United Way believes it is
one of the most effective ways to help people achieve
self-sufficiency.
United Way of Greater Knoxville is a local, independent
organization dedicated to improving lives by building
a better community. In partnership with 50 agencies,
local business, community leaders and ordinary citizens,
United Way tackles issues that matter most. By working
together, we provide a safety net of services addressing
Knoxville's most basic needs while working toward lasting
change.
