Knoxville's Alliance for Youth
Knoxville has long been considered a model Community of
Promise nationally, succeeding to create effective partnerships
and focus attention on the welfare of our community's
young people. In 2005 United Way of Greater Knoxville
expanded that legacy by integrating the Alliance for Youth
and the Five Promise framework among the organization's
Community Impact strategies.
United Way of Greater Knoxville's Alliance for Youth
initiative works to build coalitions to ensure that
every child in Knoxville has the fundamental resources
he or she needs to be ready for the future including:
Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Marketable
Skills and Opportunities to Serve.

The Alliance
for Youth was founded after the Presidents' Summit
for America's Future in 1997, where Presidents Bush,
Carter, Clinton, and Ford-with Nancy Reagan representing
Ronald Reagan-challenged the nation to make children
and youth a national priority. President George W. Bush
reaffirmed that commitment in 2001. Retired Gen. Colin
L. Powell became America's Promise founding chairman
serving in that capacity until 2001. The mission of
the Alliance for Youth is to strengthen the character
and competence of America's children through delivery
of the Five Promises:
1. Caring Adults
Ongoing relationships with caring adults -- parents,
mentors, tutors or coaches -- offer youth support,
care and guidance.
2. Safe Places
Safe places with structured activities during non-school
hours provide both physical and emotional safety for
youth.
3. A Healthy Start
Adequate nutrition, exercise, and health care pave
the way for healthy bodies, healthy minds, and smart
habits for adulthood.
4. Marketable Skills
Marketable skills through effective education
help youth navigate the transition from school to
work successfully.
5. Opportunities to Serve
Opportunities to give back through community service
enhance self-esteem, boost confidence and heighten
a sense of responsibility to the community.
